Breast Reconstruction - Now, Later or Never

Line Spacing+- AFont Size+- Print This Article

After the decision to have a mastectomy is made, and the patient visits the plastic surgeon to discuss reconstructive options, they have two options for a reconstruction procedure.

An immediate reconstruction means the plastic surgeon performs the reconstruction soon after the general surgeon performs the mastectomy. This allows the mastectomy and reconstruction to be down at one time.

If the patient has questions, concerns, or issues, they can have a delayed reconstruction. In this scenario, the mastectomy is performed and allowed to heal. The plastic surgeon can then perform the reconstruction anytime down the road.

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong procedure.
