Lumpectomy vs. Mastectomy

Line Spacing+- AFont Size+- Print This Article

After the diagnosis of breast cancer is made, patients visit a general surgeon general who's a specialist in treating breast cancer. At this point they will have a discussion about different possible procedures.

In a procedure called a lumpectomy, a portion of the breast is removed. The other procedure is called a mastectomy, where the entire breast is removed. If the latter is chosen, a referral to a plastic surgeon is made if the patient desires to discuss reconstruction or reconstructive options.
