Considerations for Breast Implants When Radiation is Needed

Line Spacing+- AFont Size+- Print This Article

If a patient receives radiation therapy after a mastectomy, it makes breast reconstruction more challenging. The reason for this is that the radiation causes changes in the skin, soft tissue and muscle could inhibit the healing process.

Dr. Kreithen, MD sees many patients who are or will be treated with radiation, and often must change the reconstructive plan. In some instances, this means waiting until the end of radiation therapy, or the patient could be referred for a free tissue transfer (DIEP Flap).
